Electrorack Introduces HydroCool-IT™ Passive Rear-door Heat Exchanger

 

Anaheim, CA – February 3^rd, 2010 – In its continuing efforts to offer innovative thermal solutions to data center managers, Electrorack has launched HydroCool-IT™, a passive, water-cooled rear-door heat exchanger designed to cool up to 30kW per rack, and the fourth in their line of “IT” cooling products.

“Advances in technology may bring increased processing power, but those same advances are now driving IT professionals to rethink their strategies when it comes to combating thermal issues in the data center,” said Todd Schneider, Electrorack’s Director of Marketing. “With HydroCool-IT, data center managers have yet another means to address the number one issue affecting facilities today.”

HydroCool-IT is a passive solution, which means there are no fans, moving parts, or electrical connections required.  The system relies on the servers to push the air through the low-resistance coil, cooling the load directly at the heat source. This neutralizes the heat before it has a chance to mix in the room, which can lead to over-cooling or equipment overheating. The rear-door design allows the units to retrofit to existing installations, and typically do not require rearrangement of enclosures. Transition frames attach directly to the enclosure and house the door that contains the heat exchanger. The entire retrofit typically takes less than thirty minutes per rack.

HydroCool-IT works in conjunction with a dedicated chiller or a Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU) that connects to the main building chilled water loop. The CDU creates an isolated secondary cooling loop minimizing liquid volume, and controls water pressure and flow. The CDU utilizes redundant pumps, actuators and control valves to maintain water temperature above the dew point to prevent condensate and eliminate the need for drains.   Additional HydroCool-IT rear door heat exchanger units can be added to the CDU as required.  Heat removed is routed to the chilled water supply by means of a stainless steel plate heat exchanger within the CDU.  The CDU controller provides intelligent monitoring, and interfaces with building management systems and web management tools for the highest reliability.
